【第30号】エチオピアへ行ってきました！

　２０２５年７月4日から20日までの17日間、私今津田中家のオーナー田中洋子は日本を離れ、ソウル経由でエチオピアの首都アディスアベバに滞在しました。洋子が大阪在住の頃から関わらせていただいている株式会社フクナガエンジニアリングのエチオピア事業の責任者ハブトム（Haftom）さんの結婚式に参列するのが主目的で、日本のユニークな方々と同行したおかげで、様々な出逢いがあり、いろいろな体験をすることができました。これからシリーズで、瓦版にエチオピア滞在記を掲載していきます。

　For 17 days, from July 4th to 20th, 2025, I, Yoko Tanaka, owner of Imazu Tanakaya, left Japan and stayed in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, via Seoul. My main purpose was to attend the wedding of Haftom, the Ethiopian business manager for Fukunaga Engineering Co., Ltd., a company I've been involved with since I lived in Osaka. Thanks to the company of unique Japanese people, I was able to make many different encounters and have many different experiences. I'll be posting a series of articles about my stay in Ethiopia in this newsletter.

エチオピアの紹介

　エチオピアは、東アフリカの内陸国で、首都はアディスアベバです。アフリカ最古の独立国の一つであり、長い歴史と豊かな文化を持つ国として知られています。80以上の民族が共存し、アムハラ語やオロモ語など複数の言語が話されています。キリスト教とイスラム教が主な宗教です。コーヒー豆の生産地・発祥地として知られているエチオピアでは、日本の茶道のように、コーヒーを淹れて客をおもてなしする作法があり、「コーヒーセレモニー」と呼ばれています。

　エチオピアは「人類誕生の地」と言われています。エチオピアのアワッシュ川下流域では、350万年前のアウストラロピテクス・アファレンシス（アファール猿人）の化石「ルーシー」が発見されたのをはじめ、多くの人類化石が発見されており、人類の進化を解明する上で重要な場所とされています。

　南の隣国ケニアは赤道が通過しており、赤道は近いですが、エチオピアの首都アディスアベバは、標高が2,355 mもあり、年間を通じて比較的涼しい気候が特徴です。乾季（10月〜1月）は晴れの日が多く、日中は20度前後で過ごしやすい気温が続きます。一方、雨季（2月〜9月）は気温が下がり、雨量が増加します。私が滞在した7月は雨季で、最高気温が20度いかない日も多く、猛暑の日本から避暑にやって来た感じでした。毎日雨が降りましたが、どしゃ降りはあまりなく、合間では晴れ間が広がったりすることもあり、過ごしやすい天候が続きました。

　1980年には、3244万人だった人口は、2025年には１億3,550万人（世界10位）となり、日本（世界12位）を抜きました（世界人口白書」2025年版）。そして、2050年には2億を超えると言われています。

　近年、急速な発展を遂げており、アディスアベバでは、高層ビルの建築ラッシュで、道路もどんどん整備されていっています。洋子が宿泊したホテルのすぐ近くには、「アフリカ連合（アフリカ大陸の55の国と地域が加盟する世界最大級の地域機関・2002年設立）」の本部がありました。東京の昭和40年代以降の高層建築ラッシュのイメージですが、当時と違い、IT・AIなども活用されていて、発展のスピードはとても速いと感じました。

　エチオピアは多民族国家であり、各民族間の政治的・経済的な対立が根強く存在。隣国のエリトリアとの紛争や内戦などの可能性もあり、陸路での移動は避けることが推奨されています。

　エチオピア暦は、エチオピアで現在も使われている独自の暦です。1年は13ヶ月で構成され、12ヶ月はそれぞれ30日間、最後の13ヶ月目は5日または6日間です。また、エチオピア暦はグレゴリオ暦よりも7年から8年遅れており、新年は9月11日頃に始まります。エチオピア人の多くは、夜明けから夕暮れまでの12時間を1サイクル、夕暮れから夜明けまでの12時間を1サイクルとする12時間制の時計を使用していて、他の多くの国の慣習と異なり、1日の始まりは真夜中ではなく夜明けです。

　主食は、米でも小麦でもなく、テフという穀物で作られた「インジェラ」です。

Introduction to Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a landlocked country in East Africa, with its capital Addis Ababa. It is one of Africa's oldest independent countries and is known for its long history and rich culture. More than 80 ethnic groups coexist here, and multiple languages, including Amharic and Oromo, are spoken. Christianity and Islam are the main religions. Known as the birthplace and producer of coffee beans, Ethiopia has a custom of brewing coffee and entertaining guests, similar to the Japanese tea ceremony, known as the "coffee ceremony."

Ethiopia is said to be the "birthplace of humanity." Many human fossils have been discovered in the lower reaches of the Awash River in Ethiopia, including the 3.5 million-year-old Australopithecus afarensis (Afarensis) fossil "Lucy," making the region an important location for understanding human evolution.

Although the equator passes through neighboring Kenya to the south and is close by, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital, is located at an altitude of 2,355 meters and features a relatively cool climate throughout the year. The dry season (October to January) sees many sunny days, with comfortable daytime temperatures hovering around 20°C. Meanwhile, the rainy season (February to September) sees lower temperatures and increased rainfall. I was there in July, during the rainy season, with many days where the high temperature didn't even reach 20°C, making it feel like I was escaping the heatwaves of Japan. It rained every day, but it wasn't heavy, and there were occasional sunny spells in between, making for comfortable weather.

The population of Ethiopia, which was 32.44 million in 1980, is expected to reach 135.5 million by 2025 (ranking 10th in the world), surpassing Japan (ranking 12th) (World Population Report 2025). It is estimated that the population will exceed 200 million by 2050.

In recent years, Addis Ababa has experienced rapid development, with skyscraper construction booming and roads being rapidly improved. The headquarters of the African Union (established in 2002, one of the world's largest regional organizations, with 55 member countries and regions on the African continent) was located very close to the hotel where Yoko stayed. While the image of Tokyo's skyscraper boom from the 1960s onward is reminiscent of that time, the country is now utilizing IT and AI, and the pace of development seems much faster.

Ethiopia is a multi-ethnic nation, with deep-rooted political and economic conflicts between its various ethnic groups. Due to the possibility of conflict and civil war with neighboring Eritrea, it is recommended to avoid overland travel.

The Ethiopian calendar is a unique calendar still used in Ethiopia today. A year consists of 13 months, each of which has 30 days, with the thirteenth month having five or six days. The Ethiopian calendar is also seven to eight years behind the Gregorian calendar, with the new year beginning around September 11th. Most Ethiopians use a 12-hour clock, with one cycle of 12 hours from dawn to dusk and another cycle of 12 hours from dusk to dawn, and unlike the customs of many other countries, the day begins at dawn rather than midnight.

The staple food is injera, made from a grain called teff, rather than rice or wheat.

洋子のエチオピア滞在記 Vol.1

米子空港からソウル経由で

　エチオピアには、成田空港から出ているエチオピア航空の成田空港→アディスアベバボレ空港の直行便で行くことができるのですが、この直行便はソウルにも立ち寄って、ソウルの仁川（いんちょん）空港からも乗れるため、今回は同行する皆さんとソウルで落ち合うことにしました。

　7月4日、米子空港からLCC（格安航空会社）エアソウルに乗り、ソウルの仁川空港に到着しました。航空運賃は12,930円、所要時間は1時間半。ほぼ満席で、韓国人の方が多かった感触です。米子空港から海外へ行くのは初めてだったのですが、米子空港がコンパクトなので出国とても楽で、ハブ空港である仁川空港に短時間で行くことが出来ました。

　ソウルでは、ソウル駅近くの「剛の家」という長渕剛のファンの韓国人が運営されている日本人向けのゲストハウスをネットで見つけて、3泊しました。様々な体験も提供しているゲストハウスで、チヂミづくり体験や韓国の伝統的なボードゲーム「ユンノリ」や韓国の伝統衣装チマチョゴリも体験し、３泊目は、今回同行するメンバーと「剛の家」で落ち合い、一緒に宿泊し、近くのお店での韓国料理を堪能しました。

Yoko's Ethiopia Travel Diary Vol.1

From Yonago Airport via Seoul

Ethiopia can be reached by a direct flight from Narita Airport to Addis Ababa Bole Airport on Ethiopian Airlines. However, this direct flight also stops in Seoul, and since it can also be boarded from Incheon Airport, I decided to meet up with my traveling companions in Seoul.

On July 4th, I boarded the low-cost carrier Air Seoul from Yonago Airport and arrived at Incheon Airport in Seoul. The airfare was 12,930 yen, and the flight took an hour and a half. The flight was almost full, with a lot of Korean passengers. This was my first time flying internationally from Yonago Airport, but since Yonago Airport is compact, departing was very easy, and I was able to get to the hub airport, Incheon Airport, in a short time.

In Seoul, I found a guesthouse for Japanese people called "Tsuyoshi's House" near Seoul Station online. It's run by a Korean fan of Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi, and I stayed there for three nights. The guesthouse offers a variety of experiences, including making chijimi, playing the traditional Korean board game "Yutnori," and wearing the traditional Korean dress "Chima Jeogori." On the third night, the group met up with the other members of their trip at "Tsuyoshi's House," stayed overnight together, and enjoyed Korean food at a nearby restaurant.

Ethiopia is accessible via a direct flight from Narita Airport to Addis Ababa Bole Airport on Ethiopian Airlines. フクナガエチオピアオフィス

　7月7日の夜、「剛の家」のオーナー剛さんの車で、仁川空港まで送ってもらい、8日の0時３５分発エチオピアボレ空港行きのエチオピア航空に乗り込みました。こちらもほぼ満席。航空運賃は、仁川空港⇔ボレ空港の往復で、空港税なども含む総額が189,740円でした。到着は予定より少し早くなり、現地時間の朝6時30分頃。日本や韓国との時差が6時間なので、所要時間は約12時間でした。

　ハフトムさんがボレ空港まで迎えに来てくださり、まずはアフリカ連合近くのホテルにアーリーチェックインして少し休憩した後、エチオピアのフクナガ事務所を訪問しました。株式会社フクナガエンジニアリングさんは、２０１７年頃からJICA（独立行政法人国際協力機構）プロジェクトなどに参画してエチオピアでの事業化を進められており、現地の責任者に選任されたハブトム（Haftom）さんは、大阪オフィスでもお仕事をされていましたが、その後、エチオピアに帰国されて、２０２５年初めに会社を立ち上げられて、事業がスタートしています。フクナガさんのエチオピアの会社のオフィスは、高層ビルの２２階にあり、そこからの眺めはとても良かったです。

Fukunaga Ethiopia Office

On the evening of July 7th, Tsuyoshi, the owner of Tsuyoshi's House, drove me to Incheon Airport, where I boarded an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Ethiopia's Bole Airport, departing at 12:35 on the 8th. This flight was also nearly full. The round-trip fare from Incheon Airport to Bole Airport, including airport taxes, was 189,740 yen. We arrived a little earlier than expected, around 6:30am local time. With a six-hour time difference with Japan and Korea, the flight took approximately 12 hours.

Haftom picked me up at Bole Airport, and after an early check-in and short rest at a hotel near the African Union, I visited the Fukunaga office in Ethiopia. Fukunaga Engineering Co., Ltd. has been participating in JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) projects and other initiatives since around 2017 to advance its business in Ethiopia, and Haftom, who was appointed as the local manager, had also worked at the Osaka office before returning to Ethiopia and launching the company in early 2025. Fukunaga's Ethiopian company office is on the 22nd floor of a high-rise building, and the view from there is excellent.
